To the Editor:

Congratulations on the completion of the first year publication of the Gay Peoples Chronicle.

I believe that your newspaper is a valuable contribution to the members of Cleveland's gay community fortunate enough to read it. Additionally, it is valued by straights.

I have read the Chronicle with interest during this year, and find the publication to be well balanced, including local and non-local news pertinent to the gay community.

You are to be especially commended for your panicfree matter-of-fact approach to health topics, which unfortunately have assumed increasing importance, and for the resultant safe-sex recommendations.

I wish you continued success in your second and subsequent years, and hope that you are able to maintain the support you need (with financial and literary contributions) from the people of Cleveland

CARBON COPY

Dear Congresswoman Oakar:

Your staffers in Cleveland quickly accomodated my request for a copy of H.R. Z30. I had requested it because I wanted to see what was in it that has caused such a heavy mail response opposing it.

As you know, it is an amendment bill that specifically adds "affectional or sexual orientation" to the Civil Rights Act of protection for minorities.

I urge you to support passage of H.R. 230.

No minority should be deprived of civil rights and it is not only sad, but also reprehensible that there are groups who would deny other groups their right to equal protection under the law.

But that is the reality of our time. Unchallenged, this kind of action_could become Nazi fascism. So every instance of intolerance must be beaten.

Besides founding the local MCC--which did not long survive his departure--he was one of the first highly visible gay persons in Cleveland. He attracted a number of young gays into equally visible activism. He also laid the foundations for the Hotline, the GEAR Foundation, Focus Counselling, and High Gear.

MacDonald died in Los Angeles in 1983, of AIDS.]
